First step: check nearby GFCI outlets

A GFCI outlet (ground-fault circuit interrupter), recognizable by its "test" and "reset" buttons, often protects several other outlets on the same circuit, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. If a GFCI has tripped, every outlet it protects downstream stops working until it's reset.
