My Heat Pump Is Covered in Frost or Ice in Winter: Is That Normal?

You look out the window in January and your outdoor heat pump looks like a block of ice. The instinct is to panic — but in most cases, what you're seeing is exactly what the manufacturer expected. The real question isn't "is there ice," it's "does the ice melt on its own, regularly, or does it stay put."

Modern heat pumps are built to work in Quebec's cold weather, including well below freezing. A light layer of frost on the outdoor unit is therefore perfectly normal — the automatic defrost cycle handles it, several times an hour, without you having to intervene.

The defrost cycle: how it works normally

During the heating cycle, the outdoor unit inevitably builds up some frost — that's the normal physical consequence of extracting heat from cold air. The system monitors this buildup and, roughly every 30 to 90 minutes depending on outdoor humidity and temperature, briefly reverses operation to melt that layer. You may even see steam coming off the unit during this cycle, along with a slightly different operating sound — that's exactly the sign defrost is working as intended.

What isn't normal: the shell that never melts

A thick, solid layer of ice that fully covers the fins or physically blocks the fan means the defrost cycle isn't triggering properly — or not often enough to keep pace with buildup. The most common causes:

  • A faulty defrost thermostat or sensor — the component that detects frost buildup and triggers the cycle has stopped responding correctly
  • Low refrigerant — an undercharged system runs at a lower surface temperature than intended, which promotes faster and heavier icing
  • Blocked drainage — meltwater from the previous cycle pools up instead of draining, then refreezes, building an ice base that thickens with every cycle
  • A unit installed too low or poorly positioned — a unit mounted too close to the ground or directly under a roofline's snow shed accumulates more snow and ice than the defrost cycle can offset

Why the problem gets worse over time if left untreated

A heat pump that stays partially frozen loses efficiency disproportionately: airflow is restricted, forcing the compressor to work harder to produce the same heating effect. Over the longer term, repeated excessive freezing can bend or damage the fragile, costly-to-replace aluminum fins — or, in the most severe cases, strain the compressor enough to cause a full breakdown.

What to do while you wait for a technician

Never chip the ice off with a tool, a screwdriver, or even gloved hands — aluminum fins bend and tear easily, and once damaged, they permanently reduce the unit's efficiency. The right approach: cut power to the unit and let the ice melt naturally, or gently pour lukewarm (never hot, never boiling) water to speed up the thaw without causing thermal shock to the components.

When it's more than just defrosting

If the problem returns after every thaw-then-freeze swing, or ice builds up within hours rather than days, this is probably no longer a weather issue but an underlying mechanical problem — refrigerant, sensor, or drainage — that calls for a professional diagnosis rather than more waiting.
