My AC Is Running All Day, Is It Broken?

You notice the AC never shuts off, even at night. The instinct is to assume it's broken, but continuous operation has several possible explanations, some perfectly normal.

When it's normal

During a heat wave or a particularly hot, humid day, a properly sized system can run almost nonstop simply because cooling demand temporarily outpaces its ability to catch up. That's not a sign of failure as long as the home eventually reaches a comfortable temperature, even slowly.

How to tell the two situations apart

Feel a vent: if it's blowing noticeably cool air even after hours of continuous running, the system is working hard but functioning. If the air feels barely cooler than room temperature, there's a real problem preventing the system from cooling effectively despite the constant effort.

What you can check yourself

A clogged filter is the most common and easiest cause to fix — it restricts airflow and forces the system to work harder and longer for the same result. Also check that the outdoor unit isn't blocked by leaves, grass, or other debris reducing its efficiency.

When to call a technician

If the filter is clean and the outdoor unit clear, but continuous operation persists without the home cooling adequately, a professional diagnosis is warranted — possibly low refrigerant, a tired compressor, or a system genuinely undersized for the area it's cooling.
